First Workbench

Built in 2016, Oct 2.

The work bench was a first eye opening experience. I learned a whole bunch of things:

  • Pilot holes are important to prevent splitting. But also the right pilot whole will help prevent separating of the two wood pieces that are being joined. Splitting didn't occur for me but I couldn't get the srew to pull the two pieces of wood together. Once I corrected the pilot hole size (which was origianlly too large... somehow), things fell into place quickly.
  • Straightwood is the best wood. I originally thought, "hey these little warps in the wood won't matter once I put everything together. NOPE. I eventually used Dry Kiln wood from Home Depot after getting some help from one of their workers who was nice enough to chat and drop some knowledge.
  • Use a flat work space. I unfortunately learned while framing that my garage floor is not level. This did not translate well for when I was trying to make a level table top. To this day, I'm still not sure how to make a level work bench without a level garage floor.
  • Some helpful tools: speed square, measuring tape, compound miter saw, circular saw, and drill.
